A.H.S. Principal's Message

Welcome to Allentown High School's web site, established to provide links to specific interests including: academics, athletics, clubs, extracurriculars, Hall of Fame, and support services. Though we have had much to celebrate in the past year, such as outstanding AP, ACT and SAT scores, conference and state championships in athletics, great efforts in our fine arts department, national recognition of our FFA leadership program, character education projects, and a multicultural emphasis, we constantly seek to improve as we prepare students to navigate a future where creativity and problem solving will be essential.

As the editor of Newsweek International and New York Times bestseller, Fareed Zakaria, acknowledges in his book "The Post-American World", the United States, which until now has led the world in innovation, productivity, manufacturing, technology integration and quality of research institutions, will share that position with many emerging countries, such as China, India and Brazil. As such, our students will need the very best education to compete and succeed in a competitive and changing marketplace.  To this end, I am happy to report that students and staff are engaged in a multi-year academic improvement process that addresses three basic questions posed by educational reformer Dr. Richard DuFour:

  1. What is it that we want each student to learn?
(Our curriculum mapping project addresses this question.)
  2. How do we know that students have learned that which we want them to learn?
(Carefully examining our assessments and assessment data addresses this question.)
  3. How will we collectively respond if the students have not learned what we want them to know?
(Interventions put into place to help individual students and groups of students address this question.)

In an effort to meet these high expectations, the district provides resources to professional staff to stay abreast of new trends. This summer seven staff members were trained in Writers' Workshop, five staff members spent two weeks at Princeton University on a grant to examine texts and new approaches to history, our new science supervisor attended a Princeton University summer class on materials science, another attended a National Endowment for the Humanities seminar, many attended training on the use of curriculum maps to improve instruction, and others rewrote parts of existing courses and developed curricula for new courses to be offered this year (Modern and Early US History, Computer Graphics, Public Speaking, and Robotics). Last, administrators at the high school received instruction on curriculum mapping and instructional supervision based on Danielson's Frameworks, McTighe's Schooling by Design and Grant Wiggins' Understanding by Design.

Not only are we focused on the academic development of your child, but also on timely communication with parents through vehicles such as Realtime, a high school newsletter, parent seminars, and Naviance. Having a focus on academics and a commitment to communication with the parents and students, we are also promoting school spirit and optimism with an emphasis on the following pillars: success, perseverance, courage and excellence. Looking back at this year, we are proud of the successful implementation of Random Drug Testing. In addition, we are proud to have celebrated in November, 2008 the accomplishments and contributions that the inaugural Hall of Fame class for Lifetime Achievement has had on our school community both here and abroad and look forward to the inaugural induction of the Fall 2009 Athletic Hall of Fame members.

Welcome to Allentown High School 2009, a dynamic learning community.
