One School - One Book

Teen Read Week and Launch of One School One Book Initiative

The One School One Book committee met last October under the leadership of Dr. Nagy to select a book that all students and staff would read and discuss during the 2009-2010 school year as an interdisciplinary and fun way to incorporate reading across all subject areas. In addition, the book provides an avenue for staff and students to engage in rich classroom discussions. Furthermore, it provides the entire school community and the home of each child to discuss the book and talk about respective classroom work.

One year later after funding was provided by the Class of 2009, the 2009 New Jersey Young Adult book Selection of the Year, "Life As We Knew it" by Susan Beth Pfeffer was selected by the committee for all to read at the high school this year. Staff have received the book the first week of school and students will receive the book to commence reading the first day of Teen Read Week on October 19, 2009. Students will be given time in each of their classes that week to read the first entries in the book to initiate the journey of reading for pleasure and comprehension. The One School One Book Committee is working on class materials for teachers to use to integrate the book into the curricula offered at the high school. It is Dr. Nagy's hope that parents may consider reading the book as well and have rich discussions at home as students will have in class. This is a marvelous way for students to share what they are learning and discussing in the classroom as related to various academic disciplines.

Students and staff will be provided until the end of the winter break to read the book before looking to implement some of the recommended classroom applications. Extra books will be available in the school library media center for parents to sign out who desire to borrow a copy for their enjoyment. Parents who seek additional information on the book may refer to the following link: http://harcourtbooks.com/images/pdf/guides/life_as_we_knew_it_dg.pdf.
